YEAR OF THE TIGER
ART DISPLAY BY STEVIE SHAO
Desert Ridge Marketplace partnered with artist Stevie Shao to dream up this Year of the Tiger window display in The District. The Lunar New Year marks the start of a calendar year structured around the cycles of the moon. It’s celebrated in various cultures and each year is known by a different zodiac animal – cycling through the year of the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Each animal year is then associated with one of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal or water. 2022 is the Year of the Water Tiger, and ushers in 12 lunar months of special strength and vitality. Traditions include gathering to eat a variety of special foods, and giving gifts of money in red envelopes.
This installation was created by Seattle born-and-raised Chinese-American artist Stevie Shao and Courtney Dean of Heart of Gold Signs to celebrate the Lunar Year and arrival of spring at Desert Ridge Marketplace. Shao is an illustrator and muralist whose work features bold colors, folk art inspired imagery and a love for paint and animal life from the region. View her artwork on Instagram HERE.
